On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with episode 19, our Atmosphere Tribute.
Over the past few decades, Atmosphere has been touring the globe, making music, making fans and one member, especially, making babies. Hailing outta Minneapolis, Slug and Ant aren’t just a group, they’re Minnesota Nice!
The slept-on beatmaker and storyteller have accumulated copious amounts of success throughout the years, so it was time Take It Personal took you on a tribute trip down Atmosphere lane. We cover the classics, the obscure, fan favorites and even some collaborations.
We promise you, there will never be another Atmosphere tribute quite like this one. To further cement that, we invited Slug on the show to break bread with us.
The 2-part interview plays throughout this 4+ hour tribute show. We delve into a different side of Sean Daley. We talk family, friends, critics touring, Soundset, DJ Premier and some crazy stories like the time Rick Rubin was courting them. When you think Minnesota musicians, you immediately think of Prince, The Time, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and probably Bob Dylan, but after this show, we have to think Atmosphere will be right there with them.

On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with our Mos Def tribute.
If there was a poster that defined the indie hip-hop movement, it would have the face of The Mighty Mos Def on it. Whether you first heard him on My Kung Fu, The Love Song or Stakes Is High Remix, you immediately knew what you heard was special. We're talking a generational talent. Mos Def had the voice, the sound, the style, the charm, the humor, the endless stories and the ability to spit bars as great as singing those melodic hooks. A real dual-threat. Triple-threat when you factor in his acting chops.
If LL Cool J is the face of Def Jam, Mos Def is the face of Rawkus. He breathed new life into hip-hop in the late 90s. Mos was the last Jedi able to carry on that Native Tongues torch. On Episode 85, we cover the catalog, the guest spots and discuss our favorite Mos Def moments.
Don't forget to follow us @takeitpersonalradio, as we have an exciting giveaway on this episode.

Episode 120 is part 2 of our J Dilla Tribute, it also marks the start of our 7th season doing Take It Personal. We started this podcast in 2016 as an excuse to get together and listen to some great music. Who knew this would bring so many people together from all walks of life? We went from talking about rappers on this show to eventually interviewing the very best of them. Rappers we grew up idolizing, we were "giving them their flowers" before that became a played-out word with our titanic tributes.
We're putting the explanation point on the remarkable young career James Yancey had. This extra large episode features 3 mixes clocking in over 4+ hours with early Jay Dee production as well as collaborations with Madlib, Phat Kat, Illa J, Q-Tip, Common, Frank-n-Dank, Chino XL, Royce Da 5'9, DOOM, Raekwon, De La Soul, The Roots and Black Star to name a few.
This 2-part tribute features over 125 Dilla tracks and has a runtime of 7.5 hours. This is simply our way saying, J Dilla changed our lives.

Episode 119 is our tribute to one of the greatest producers of all-time, J Dilla. Whether you knew him as Jon Doe, Jay Dee, J. Yancey, Dilla Dog or just Dilla, you knew him as the most influential producer hip-hop has seen in the last quarter century. J Dilla wasn't just a musical genius, he absolutely reinventing the way hip-hop was being created. His passion, imagination and the prowess displayed on each track is something we'll never be able to duplicate. To put it bluntly, J Dilla was simply ahead of his time.
On part 1, we're playing the essentials from The Pharcyde, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Common, The Roots, Janet Jackson, Q-Tip and of course Slum Village. We also focus on the solo career of Dilla as well as the collaborations with Madlib, Ghostface Killah, MF DOOM and Jay Electronic.
Whether we're talking about Pete Rock, Preemo, Q-Tip, RZA or even Madlib, you can immediately identify their signature sound. They hold a special place in our hearts, but J Dilla's place in different. His music hits different. We can't think of a better way to close-out 2022 than with this 2-part tribute in honor of James Dewitt Yancey.
Like Joni Mitchell says "You don't know what you've got til it's gone."

On this flashback of episode 10, we give you over 6+ hours of the Work of Mart collection. Originally, this was released in 2 installments but we have remastered the show and combined part 1 and part 2.
It’s only right: the greatest producer of all-time receives the greatest tribute of all-time. It was no easy feat selecting and sequencing tracks for this massive show.
We hope after listening to the incredible this Work of Mart homage, you'll agree, DJ Premier is the GOAT. When you cover Premo's illustrious career, it's impossible to include every masterpiece in just one show. But don't worry, we've made sure to include all the ill-collabos, obscure remixes and of course, your favorite classics too!

On episode 149, we're honoring this 1993 musical masterpiece. This classic ATCQ album embodies everything that made us me fall in love with hip-hop. It was pure perfection. An absolute game changer and the album that helped usher in the 2nd golden era.
Like what we’ve recently done with Paul’s Boutique, we strip this album completely and build it back using original samples in true TIP fashion. We reproduce this classic that’ll allow you to hear this album in a whole new way.
Get ready to relive 1993 all over again.

We're starting to remaster older shows and present them as 1 episode as opposed to breaking them up into parts, like they were originally been released as.
On this flashback of episode 54, we give you over 5+ hours of one of the greatest hip-hop battles of all-time, Nas vs. Jay-Z.
We knew when making this that it had to be special. It had to be something unlike we've ever witnessed before, even though the battle took place nearly decades ago. It was important to re-create the magic and the memories and celebrate two of the most decorated veterans in hip-hop.
This epic episode plays like a Scorsese film. But, unlike most films, this gladiator battle has 4 acts. Each battle is carefully curated to bring out the best in each opponent.
We found a way to breathe new life into this battle of rap dominance and New York supremacy. Whether you're Team Nas or Team Jay-Z, we guarantee you moments where you'll feel conflicted, startled and even celebratory.
